The Bar of Ireland Launches New Media, Internet and Data Protection Bar Association (“MIDBA”)

23 March 2023

The new Specialist Bar Association aims to be a centre of legal expertise in these evolving areas of law

MIDBA, supported by The Bar of Ireland is aimed at legal professionals who practice, or have an interest, in the areas of media, internet, and data protection law.

The aim of MIDBA is to promote and advance knowledge in these dynamic and fast-moving areas of law, as well as to provide networking opportunities across the legal sector.

The launch event for MIDBA is open to all and will take place on Thursday, 30 March, at 4.30pm in the Distillery Building. Speakers at the event include Attorney General Rossa Fanning SC and Sara Phelan SC, Chair of the Council of The Bar of Ireland.

The launch of this Bar Association reflects the expansion of activity in areas such as privacy and defamation, and draws from national, European and international developments.

Claire Hogan BL, newly-elected chair of MIDBA, will deliver welcoming remarks at the launch event. Speaking ahead of the launch, Ms. Hogan said

Given the seismic changes in the media landscape in recent years, and with many of the largest technology companies having their European headquarters located in Ireland, it is essential that the legal community are kept up to date on developments in these complex and fast-moving areas of law.

The Bar is ideally placed to take a leadership position in respect of litigation, advisory work, and in considering legislative developments.

Registration is now open online for the launch event and those with an interest in the fields are urged to sign up as places are limited.

The Bar of Ireland has 17 Specialist Bar Associations, and the Media, Internet & Data Protection Bar Association joins a number of new associations in the field of Taxation, Insolvency, Tort and Insurance, and Financial Services which were all recently developed.
